tucker max email

I sent Tucker Max, the writer, producer, and screenplay writer of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell an email telling him about how the movie was received at Cannes since it didn't look like he was there. He posted the email on his site.

Luggage is Back... with journal!

I believe I left off here...

Wednesday I had work from 2-8 so I went to the pavilion early to upload my Flip video. I took the bus back to the hotel after upload and got a bit of a nap in and went back to the pavilion. This was the day that Rose showed me the back-back way. It's the way through the docks where all the yachts are. With my handy badge, I can get in here. Yes! I started to feel pretty sick this day (I'm still sick. I got whatever I have the Sunday before I left!). So I went to bed early due to this crazy not feeling good thing I had going on.

Thursday I worked 8-2. I walked to work because it was some holiday and the buses were on a weird schedule. After work, I walked around town with some friends and the American Pavilion got to go to a private screening of Inglorious Basterds. That's a movie that will be a hit when it comes out. We all agreed though that there needs to be a few reedits... either taking stuff out or adding stuff in. A few of us went to The Melting Pot. No, not the one they have in the States. It was... slow. I still have to say that "waiting" is a key word on this trip. This time we were waiting on food. It was karaoke night at the AmPav which was a lot of fun. I decided the best parties were definitely the AmPav parties.

Friday I got to go to the press screening of The Imaginarium of Dr.Parnassus. Such a good movie. You would never know that they had to change so much of the script due to Heath Ledger's sudden passing. It all looked as though that was how it was originally scripted. Great editing. Definitely a dark, yet whimsical, fairy tale. Suggest it to all. I had to get to work extra early to see this. I got to the coffee bar at about 7:10, started pots of coffees and left at 7:30 to run to the Lumiere theatre. It worked out. Walking the red carpet so early in the morning and in flats was unusual... but I may prefer it to getting dressed up in front of the microwave and doing my final touch-ups in the elevator mirrors.

Later that day I hung out with culinary at Ginger's which is a pretty cool bar. We went and shopped around town before they had to go to their shift.

I walked home by the beach and took a nap. After I woke up, I realized I lost my Cannes bag which I got for free for having a short film. This bag had my everything in it. Luckily, I found it the next day.

Saturday I worked from 2-8 so I walked around town and bought a few things. I saw some streets I had never been on and it was probably one of the hottest days since arriving. It was dead in coffee and Armon let us off an hour early. I was still sick so I was stoked about that. A group of us went to dinner up the windy road and I went to bed early that night.

Sunday... the last full day in Cannes. I packed the majority of the morning and then walked to the city. I got some ice cream and then headed to the AmPav. They didn't need me to work so I went swimming for the first and only time in the French Riviera. It was a bit impromptu so I didn't have my bathing suit so I went in my clothes. I really wanted to go swimming. The group of us swam out to this rock island and hung out on it for a while. It was real refreshing. I took the free shuttle back to the hotel and got ready for the Rat Party- leftover everything is free for the students from 5-7. At the party, I found out that we won the Flip video contest and 3 of us got honorary mention. Pretty awesome. I said my goodbye's and went to bed early that night as well.

Monday I went home. My luggage was lost. But it came in today!

I can definitely say that the world is a lot smaller than I imagined it to be after going on this trip.

Next time I go to Cannes, it will be for my movie. :)

Oh and one more thing

My group won the Flip video contest. Thanks for the votes! I also got one of the honorable mentions along with two others in my group. Whoo hoo!

Lost Luggage/Journal

My luggage was lost which has my daily journal inside it. So I will give the last few days entry after I get that back.

Don't Forget!

Go to www.cannescelebs.com and watch the cannes happens videos. And tell everyone else to do the same. Help us win!

And here is where we left off...

I am sitting at the pavilion right next to the ocean and sand. Awesome. Let me fill you all in on what has happened.

Friday. Nothing too exciting. I edited and uploaded my short and worked from 2-8. I know I saw a movie but can't remember which one. Must have been awesome. Didn't really do much this day.

Saturday I went shopping with John from culinary in the market. It was a lot of fun to hang out with someone who wasn't film- especially someone who knows how to cook well. The markets here are so pretty. I love them.

I worked 2-8 and then saw a screening on the beach. It was Soundtrack to a Revolution. Not my favorite but there were good enough friends to keep me entertained. The group of us walked back to the hotel afterwards.

Sunday I worked the morning shift from 8-2. I definitely like the morning shift more. It frees up the rest of the afternoon for movies and shopping and hanging out around the festival. This day I went home and took a nap and then went back to the pavilion and saw I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Great movie. Totally geared towards college students. Pretty sure if the interns didn't go it would have been a bust. We were asked if we were paid to see the movie by one buyer. We then went to the Guinness Pub to celebrate one of the girl's 21st birthday.

Monday I worked 7:30- 1:45. I helped set up for a party and then saw I love you, Phillip Morris. A group of us went shopping and then saw Holy Water which was awesome. Both of those movies were great. I know Phillip Morris is going to be distributed in the States, but I'm not too sure about Holy Water.

After the movies we went out for Jen's birthday. We went to the Slumdog Millionaire party which was up a windy hill and seemingly in the middle of nowhere. They had models and gave us free gift bags which included a shirt. Not bad.

Monday I also met a guy who is a film distributor in Australia. He asked for my card so that he could keep in touch to see what films are good in America and which were a bust. Cool. Maybe I can add to my resume- International Youth Film Distributor Extraordinaire... or something like that.

Tuesday I edited for the flip video and I uploaded that today (Wednesday). Worked from 2-8 and then power was out for most of the shift due to a strike. One of the girls and I decided to do honey shots in our boredom. We were bouncing off the walls for a while.

Mike in culinary moved me to bar to "work". I gave out 3 beers. Mike really just likes to move me around to see what my reaction will be I think. Yesterday, he also put me in culinary to move all the stuff from the fridge to a cooler. It was actually a lot of fun because I don't get to hang out with the kitchen guys a lot.

I met Eli Roth as well. So cool. I introduced myself to him and he felt the need to introduce himself back which I thought was funny seeing as he had just come out of a panel.

One of the guys got me a ticket to see Vincere for a carpet screening. I'm sure it was a great movie, but all 7 of us interns fell asleep in it. Maybe if we all got together we could piece together the parts we were awake for.

Afterwards we went to a party at the pavilion and then headed home for sleep. Or that's what I thought. I ended up hanging out with some of my friends until about 4am on the balcony, and then getting sleep. But, no complaints here. I'm sitting steps away from sand and can hear the ocean.

I love France.

Au revoir.

Sorry if stuff is spelled wrong or repeated or is not making sense. We can thank my lack of sleep on that. But, I can sleep the whole way back on the plane.

Two work days down

And last night was the first night I got some gooooood sleep.

Our first day of work was on Wednesday. I worked the first shift with Tim and Dani (she only lets you call her Daniela if you can say it beautifully). Tim and I walked the 2 miles to work. We had to be there at 745. It was fun seeing the city start to come alive, especially the day the festival started.

After work I went and walked around the market place for a while and watched people buy movies. Lots of fun. I went to the Short Film Corner and saw my video. Crazy!!!!! I picked up the catalogue for the whole corner and it was so neat to see my video listed.

I saw a movie called either Burning Bright or Ravenous. Still not sure. The ticket and promos said Burning Bright, inside the movie it said Ravenous. It was... interesting. I fell asleep a few times, but to be honest I have just become so accustomed to falling asleep in those chairs that it just seems so natural that it's hard not to.

Wednesday night we tried the rush line. What a bummer. We were in the first few in rush line for UP and they didn't let anyone in even though the house was empty. Such a disappointment. Apparently, they didn't want to let rush line in and then have the theatre still empty. Understandable, but still frustrating since we waited for so long. But, I did make some friends with some film makers from Germany and Switzerland. They were so impressed that my short was 2 minutes long they said they would check it out.

So instead, we walked to a little Chinese restaurant and got drinks. The girl and I that went were so tired that I ordered orange juice and she got nothing. We walked around a little bit more with the guys that we went with and then just caught the bus back to the hotel. It was still a pretty fun night.

Thursday was same with work only we decided to take the bus because we had both been out so late. We got to work at 730 and started brewing a ton of coffee. I think I can work at Starbucks after this.

I have become great friends with culinary so one of the chefs split his lunch with me. Yes! Not another croissant or apple (I eat at least 3 of each a day!).

Afterwards, I met up with Ari, Becky, Ryan, and Roarke, and we went and saw Coffin Rock which was amazing. We only went and saw that because the theatre next to us with Moon in it, which we initially were planning on seeing, was packed. We all fell asleep in that, too. But it happens. I'm telling you- comfy chairs.

I signed up earlier that day for the red carpet of Fish Tank. As students, we get a certain number of tickets and it goes to a raffle. Pip, the head of tickets for the students, got the same amount for all the students wanting to go. Some of the students didn't want to see it so I took an extra and went with my friend Roarke from Chicago. I'll make sure to get the pictures from his camera of us walking on the carpet.

Afterwards we walked around town with croissants and took a taxi back with one of the interns we found after the show.

Now, I am about to edit some footage for the flip camera project we are doing. I will put the link up here and tomorrow morning I will get a picture account. Today and tomorrow I work 2-8 and Sunday I start working at 730am again. It's a 2 day rotating schedule.

Au revoir!

Getting our Jobs

We got our job assignments today!

I am on the coffee crew. There are six of us working it- 3 per shift. I'm pretty excited.

I also bought a bus pass today. Essential. Thank goodness. Carrying around euro change gets heavy.

One of the coffee crew guys and I arranged the beverage room to fit a ton of beer. It was quite the task. Very exhausting and very hot. But we got a lot of it done in the short amount of time we had. The lady really appreciated our help.

We had a ton of workshops today. Those are probably more exhausting than walking around since we are just sitting.

After workshops we got into our Flip camera groups. I will keep you posted on where to look for those and you MUST tell all your friends and they have to tell all of their friends so we can win. Thanks!

I am also cheating the internet system here at the hotel. I have made a profit by buying internet. Dad, I know you're proud. I'm surprised one of the business students didn't come up with this.

Well that's today. Nothing too exciting. I have to wake up around 6:15 tomorrow for my morning shift. Whoo hoo! Tonight will be an early night.

Hello Festival tomorrow!!!!

Au revoir!

day 2 and 3

I'm doing this without my awesome notes that I have been taking throughout the festival. Hopefully, looking through pictures will help. Speaking of which, I am trying to upload those and having an extremely hard time. I will try and get a photobucket to make it faster and more efficient tomorrow.

Anyways...

Yesterday we did a lot of walk... an extreme amount of walking. We met up with our mentors and groups and then did a brief tour of the surrounding hotel area. Tour included learning where the chocolate and wine store are as well as the laundry mat and cheap sandwich shops.

We then all walked to the international college for a "brief" meeting. Or, it was supposed to be. It was interesting, though. Then we got lunch at one of the sandwich shops on the beach- successfully ordered in French. :)

After that, the groups went to the Pavilion and had tours of everything. We got to see the red carpet get set up. Real cool.

A few of us walked to a clock tower at the top of a hill which had a gorgeous view of the whole town as well as the pavilion.

We split into groups and ours went to this amazing restaurant and I ordered the best alfredo I've ever had.

I really love how we can walk everywhere here. So nice. And if you can't walk, the public transportation is awesome.

When we all got back all the groups joined back in one of the hotel rooms. To quote Walter from today, "Did you get your rest last night? Then why am I getting so many noise complaints?!?!"

Today wasn't the most exciting day as it was all workshops. I definitely learned a lot. The best part was standing at a bus stop with a group and meeting a director of short film along with it's producer and finding out it has won a few awards at different festivals in North America. Very cool.

We were on our way to the Student Party and so we all looked pretty amazing, I was wearing my heels and we decided to hike up the windy road that lead to the clock tower afterwards. Not to go to the clock- but apparently there was a jazz club up there. We never found it.

A few of us are going to get glammed up one night and go back up the windy street and eat at one of the restaurants because they looks so nice and local. We will probably need my handy dandy French book that everybody keeps asking to borrow.

Tomorrow we find out our job assignments. I am a little nervous but I will take it with a smile and make the most of it. As we were told by Walter, "You are young and beautiful!" So I guess I should work with what I have.

I will update as soon as I can. Bed time is very soon.

Au revoir!

Finally Here

I am finally here!

Okay, this is going to be brief as I only have a few minutes before we meet. When we arrived on Saturday, the Flagler girls met some fun guys from Bentley in Boston. We walked soooo much because we didn't want to fall asleep. At least 6 miles of walking done.

We first went to a little pizzeria. After I enthusiastically yelled "Bon jour!" to the waitress, we learned that he spoke no english. That was a fun lunch.

The group of us then walked to the pavilion and found a love seat on the beach. Awesome.

We got some grub at a local sandwich shop for dinner and walked around some more but we were all in bed by 10.

I will add some more later today about yesterday when the program actually began, but I have to walk to my room. I am on the 8th floor. Walter Harris- the program director- said I have the best room and view. It's the highest up and one of the larger rooms. Sweet.

I tried to upload pictures but it's taking too long and I really need to brush my teeth.

Oh, and my French is getting so much better. I can order at a sandwich shop in complete French and they mostly understand me.

I will post pictures tonight and go into better detail when I can.

Happy Mother's day, Mommy! I love you!

Au revoir!

Leaving in 5 minutes!

I'm leaving soon! I have my car loaded. I have triple checked everything though I am sure I will do another check... can never be too sure. Last time I flew I forgot my ID in St.A so I had to carry my birth certificate with me. I don't think that will be tolerated this time around.

I'm a bit nervous about how heavy my bag is. I haven't weighed it but I'd say it's about the same weight and size as a 4-year-old.

There will be 3 of us Flagler girls on the same flight. That should help make it go faster. We all took advanced tv together so it will be nice to have them on the plane. Our seats are even close together. Maybe we can bargain to switch with people.

That's all for now. I'd give you a French phrase lesson but my book is in the car. And the only phrase I know by heart still is, "Les freins! Les freins!" At least I know something.

Au revoir

Those final items

I have almost everything in my suitcase. Tonight, I will be staying up putting labels on my dvd's and my resume and business cards inside the dvd cases. Fun night, huh?

My mom and I got euros.

I still need to pack detergent and one more dress (mom is altering it as we speak).

Then I should be good to go!

Mom just called to tell me to try on the dress. I hope I get a red carpet invite simply to wear that dress... and because it would be awesome to walk the carpet.

After reading my French book, here are two common phrases I will be saying:

Je suis touriste.
I'm a tourist.

Je ne parle pas francais.
I do not speak French.

Wish me luck!

Au revoir!

Packing

I put my first items into my suitcase. Whoa. Still can't believe I'm going out of the country for the first time (don't really count the Bahamas since I didn't need a passport... or a language phrase book).

I bought a French phrase book yesterday. Two actually. The only thing I have memorized is "Les freins! Les freins!" "The brakes! The brakes!" It could come in handy in a taxi, possibly.

Tomorrow I have to get my money changed to euros and pray that my business cards come in. If they don't I am going to just make some at Staples and pick them up on Thursday. Let's hope it doesn't come down to that.

I will probably put up another post tomorrow, and while I am in the airport I am sure I will post something else while waiting.

Bonne nuit!
